AMY is a survival horror repeating the old formula that worked so well in the 1990s. Paul Cuisset now head of Vector Cell Studio and creator of the famous game platforms Flashback, is back with this title.
This survival horror you the opportunity to play as a young scientist whose first name Lana, along with Amy, a girl with autism receiving psychic powers. The duo will face a virus that contaminated absolutely everyone in the town of Silver City in 2034.
A storyline created by Cuisset Paul, a true pillar of the French video game that has offered us some great ideas for the main adventure of AMY. The scenario revolves around the relationship between fusional very Lana and Amy, what the scenario very addictive because you must pay attention to his own life, but also that of the little girl that we can stay alive throughout the app.
The recipe works perfectly and the commitment of our two heroines begin with intrigue us to finally take us right at the heart. Instinctively, the player takes Amy under her wing as her own daughter, and the relationship between these two characters is felt directly in the path of the script. However, regret lies in the many tricks of the scenario itself still remains rather conventional, with a sense of déjà vu.
Being a real fan of survival horror genre, I could be intrigued by this independent project, billed as a homecoming of its kind. AMY So I waited as a real breath of fresh air for a genre in decline slightly, since the heyday although Resident Evil Dead Space managed a feat worth when it was released.
Graphics
Remember, AMY is a standalone game with a budget does not bordering the millions of dollars and yet the game turns out to be very satisfactory from a graphical perspective, with effects of light and shadow mastered and texture rather fine most of the time.
The level design in turn is quite repetitive in the choice of rather dull colors, in contrast to what was the choice by the developers wanted to provide a climate very dark and apocalyptic title. The environments are well filled nicely, with lots of objects present across different levels. The graphics and level design are held as an essential point of the atmosphere of the game quite distressing and oppressive.
Air contaminated areas are also present in several locations of each chapter, this will affect the appearance of Lana, who will be transformed gradually, and the visibility of the player who is afraid.
AMY suffers, however, some technical problems such as slowdowns too present, and jerking movements accentuated when Lana and Amy. Some bugs collision and AI are also worth mentioning, even if it lies in the anecdotal. It transpires as the goodwill of Vector Cell shows that indeed a true culmination of their game was done.
Gameplay
From this point of view, the title essentially reiterates what was already seen in the old survival horror in terms of displacements. Gameplay quite heavy, but that challenge shall not affect the game fun and this is how a true survival game should be.
The fragility of the characters are feeling 100% in its basic combat system, consisting of one weapon throughout the game, a stick that will be used carefully since it has breaks every shot you wear. Nothing is easier on the fighting against the zombies, since a key can be used to type and a button to dodge.
Amy meanwhile has powers such as extremely well thought out, the ability to create a bubble of silence allowing Lana to break a window without the enemy does not hear its crashing or the ability to send shock waves for repel the enemy to protect Lana.
Regarding the gameplay, this title may make us think Ico with the need to hold hands with our accomplice in order to protect and heal itself'm all infections that can compare with the title of Fumito Ueda and of Team Ico does not go further.
Regarding the difficulty, this title is not put in any hands. Terribly uncompromising and can become annoying at times, the title asks us constantly to appeal to our sense of observation to overcome the many puzzles in the game, however, was specifically intended to reflect the player . Note nonetheless an essential point, namely the checkpoints far away from each episode of the adventure and this can be frustrating for those who do not seek special challenge.
Many issues critical to the success of a soft nature horrific, namely the phases of hacks are simply essential. These phases then allow you to disable security systems and even to shut off power in order to advance in level. The system hacking AMY works like Mastermind, where you must correctly place four symbols. Unfortunately, this level of the game remains pretty basic and above all very random. title The scripts are completely random, that is to say that the enemies and the decorative elements such as electricity that is cutting a sudden never arrive at the same time as in a previous section, which gives a real pressure and mainly a more interesting replayability.
Regarding the health meter, in addition to holding the hand of Amy, please know that you can treat with syringe scattered throughout the levels. Paradoxically, you can also let you invade the infection to voluntarily go through a place filled with people infected with the virus they think you're one of them.
Failure to AMY remains in its backup system, which automatically preserves our party at the end of each chapter, namely that no manual backup is available. This is exactly what the player will slow in its progress over the main frame. The gameplay is based exclusively on cooperation between our two female protagonists, and that is what makes the way of playing with an additive of AMY communication by looks and gestures perfectly rooted in the world of software.
Life:
With six chapters that can be completed in roughly two hours each depending on the type of player, know that for a player accustomed to survival horror in the former can overcome history in ten hours.
The total absence of supporting the growth index and the path of adventure makes the title intractable and your nerves will be put to severe tests. However, the play remains a horror unusual experience that will keep you in suspense from beginning to end.
The lifetime of AMY is an example for other productions of this kind, given the prices that are proposed.
Soundtrack:
Apart from the graphics entirely convincing, you can enjoy a soundtrack that is just perfect. Agreeing successfully background of the game, knowing with symphonic themes to be heard at the right time and sound effects constantly present in the gameplay.
The musical themes are felt in cinematics and that is exactly worthy of the great Hollywood composers. The sound effects for their part, are simply the most successful elements of AMY. Between the sound of the fog, the English dubbing quality, the howling zombies, everything is there to be engulfed fully in the adventure of Lana and Amy.
All decorative elements are accompanied by a sound effect of its own. The sound environment is a key point of the atmosphere and post-apocalyptic horror of the world title.
Editor's Note: Despite an annoyance felt at the beginning of the game, particularly because of savepoints too far away, AMY is a game tying and full of great ideas. A title that all fans of survival horror absolutely must purchase. Atmosphere controlled, compelling graphics and a soundtrack simply sublime make this game one of the titles to purchase on the PlayStation Store or Xbox Live. If the game suffers from some technical flaws and a rather conventional scenario, AMY remains as a technology showcase for future independent projects. Vector Cell and Paul Cuisset mastered the subject and the willingness of the team who contributed to this game is felt throughout the adventure. AMY is the little gem that allows us to return to the roots of a kind totally unique.
